World Learning selected this photo of Sri Lestari from UCP Roda Untuk Kemanusiaan as the winner of “Most Inspiring Story” for their “What do Empowered Women and Girls Look Like?” photo contest earlier this month.
When Sri Lestari was 23, she was in an accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. For 10 years Sri was house-bound, assuming she had lost not only the use of her legs, but her freedom as well. That is, until she got her wheelchair and modified motorcycle. Now Sri lives a full, independent life and is employed as a social worker by UCP Roda Untuk Kemanusiaan, the Indonesian office of UCP Wheels. Sri inspired so many people during her annual Journey for Change throughout Indonesia. She told everyone her inspirational story and shared the importance of people with disabilities having independence and being able to pursue their dreams. Sri stopped by Sulawesi to empower and advocate for people with disabilities.
