They came to the UCP Wheels warehouse in August—as they have for the last several years—to help us prepare 20 wheelchairs which were sent to El Salvador and the Philippines (for Hurricane relief). “I always love having UNIDOS volunteer with us,” says David Hernandez, UCP Wheels’ Assistant Warehouse Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, “Not only do they make it a fun day; they’re also hard workers!”
And now they have provided 20 more (complex children’s) chairs with this holiday gift! UCP Wheels’ average cost to provide a wheelchair is $250, which is very low since most of the children UCP Wheels serves are those with very involved disabilities. A complex positioning chair for a child who needs postural or head and neck support costs an average of $3,000 or more in the United States, but thanks to the efforts of groups like UNIDOS, UCP Wheels can rebuild donated wheelchairs to meet industry standards and provide them at a fraction of the cost to someone person who greatly needs a high-quality wheelchair but could never afford one otherwise.
UNIDOS’ holiday gift will mean that 20 children will be able to attend school, play with friends, or even do things as simple as getting themselves a glass of water for the first time in their lives, once they receive their wheelchairs. On their behalf, UCP Wheels for Humanity extends our most sincere thanks to UNIDOS, and wishes you a happy holiday season!
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to involve your group in the community, call UCP Wheels to ask about setting up a volunteer project that will help bring mobility to people with disabilities throughout the world! We love welcoming new friends.
