Rocio was a victim of gun violence at the young age of eight leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. She developed scoliosis after receiving an ill-fitted wheelchair; however, through a friend, she received a new properly-fitted wheelchair from UCP Wheels for Humanity. Art became her therapy in recovering from and overcoming her disability – turning her into an independent and aspiring artist!
In March 2015, Rocio attended one of our adaptive sports camps in El Salvador where she taught an art workshop. Rocio’s perseverance shows how much mobility can empower people with disabilities and live a life without limits. She plans on opening her own art gallery.
This short film debuted at Wheels in Motion on Saturday, September 26 at Skirball Cultural Center. This film would not be possible without the generous time and support of Francine Weiner, Béla Temesvåry and Steve Galichinski.
