115 wheelchairs left the UCP Wheels warehouse last week on their way to Zimbabwe, thanks to the generous donation of a truck rental from our friends at Galpin! The shipment included 50 complex children’s wheelchairs, 20 standard children’s wheelchairs, 12 active wheelchairs, 5 sports wheelchairs, 25 PET hand crank vehicles, and several pieces of physical therapy equipment. Galpin’s donation allowed us to get these items from our North Hollywood warehouse to our shipping partner efficiently and in greater quantity than we would have been able to otherwise.
There are an estimated 792,400 people in Zimbabwe who require assistive devices and the services that accompany them, yet only 37% of them have what they need, leaving more than half a million people without the opportunity to move independently through the world (World Health Organization). In addition, institutional and environmental barriers make people with disabilities one of the most marginalized groups in Zimbabwe and further perceptions that people with disabilities are passive and unproductive “burdens” to society (Department for International Development, Zimbabwe).
We are proud to be partnering with Galpin to make this situation a little easier for 115 individuals who are struggling in Zimbabwe. Our long-time partnership with Galpin and their President Beau Boeckmann, a UCP Wheels Advisory Council Member has helped thousands of people all over the world since we began working together more than 10 years ago, and we extend to them our most sincere thanks for their generosity and leadership on this important issue!
