On Saturday, September 28, 2013, UCP Wheels hosted Wheels in Motion: An Event to Move Humanity Forward at the Petersen Automotive Museum. More than $200,000 was raised to further our mission to increase access to mobility for people with disabilities who live in developing countries!
Wheels in Motion featured interactive experiences and demonstrations that delighted and inspired guests, including modified motorcycle and accessible limousine displays, wheelchair seating demonstrations, a photo booth, drinks and dancing late into the night, and live painting by artist and wheelchair user Tommy Hollenstein. All this, in addition to UCP Wheels’ famous silent and live auctions, hosted by the fantastic Tony Magnemi!
Big auction winners this year included Harold Belkin, who won our coveted Dream Vacation Package (two first class tickets on United Airlines to nearly anywhere in the world), and Daniel Scott Johnson, who won a trip for four to majestic Oheka Castle in New York. And as a surprise twist in the evening, long-time friend of the organization Steve Cobin gave up his Opportunity Drawing win, so guests could bid on it and raise extra funds! Brad and Sherry Creger happily won the unexpected round of bidding, and took home a weekend Aston Martin rental and stay at La Costa Resort & Spa.
Executive Director Michael Allen comments: “Our hope for this year was to give guests an opportunity to explore and discover our organization’s story, rather than asking them to sit and listen to us talk about it. And it turned out to be an event as dynamic as the individuals who we serve throughout the world: surprising, engaging, and full of possibility.”
